At Esperance Senior High School (ESHS), Physical Education (PE) is more than just a subject, it’s a cornerstone of student development, fostering physical fitness, teamwork, and personal growth.

A distinctive feature of ESHS’s PE program is its emphasis on experiential learning. Students participate in various camps and excursions, providing real-world contexts to their learning and fostering a deeper connection to physical education. This term, our dedicated PE teachers will further develop our students’ life skills by holding Year 9 and 10 Outdoor Education camps at Lucky Bay. In the lead-up to this, students will need to prepare, taking into consideration the weather, food, activities, and working together.

Within the PE program, we also offer healthy competition against other schools in the Great Southern and Goldfields districts. This term, in particular, ESHS Year 8/9 students will compete in the annual Eagles AFL Cup competition against four Goldfields teams. ESHS will participate later this term in the SunSmart WA School Surfing Titles, competing against other regional schools such as Albany Senior High School and Denmark Senior High School. Last year, especially, was a successful year for ESHS in this competition as we had two teams make it into the Surfing and Bodyboarding State Surfing Titles held at Trigg.

ESHS’s PE program is part of a broader commitment to student well-being and personal excellence. Through personalised pathways, the school ensures that each student receives tailored support to thrive academically, socially, and physically. This holistic approach not only promotes physical health but also instils values of teamwork, resilience, and leadership. An example of this was our recent School Athletics Carnival where students participated in individually and team events. The students were supported by peers and staff, led by their Faction Captains and encouraged to do their best in the events they entered. Whether students succeeded or failed, the resilience shown was at its best.

Our Physical Education program and its staff are a vital component to our educational offerings, equipping students with the skills and experiences necessary for a healthy and successful future.
