The challenge for 63 year 9 students this term is to investigate pasta in terms of its origins, versatility, nutritional value and cooking techniques in preparation for their final assessment for the course.
The students had the opportunity to fine-tune their cooking skills and their understanding of pasta cooking by creating Macaroni Cheese and Spaghetti Meatballs with recipes provided in class.
The three Foods for Us classes required 9.3 kg of pasta (macaroni and spaghetti to be precise) and 7.7 kg of cheese varieties to be purchased for the two practical lessons.
This week it is now up to the students to prepare their own recipes which is an accumulation of several lessons with them researching pasta dishes, refining recipes, and submitting food orders to ensure quantities are purchased. Photographs of the students finished plating/presentation could earn them 10 marks towards their production score for the assessment. It is great to see students taking on teacher feedback and putting thought into their plating and garnishing. There has been a noticeable improvement with presentation and time management as the semester has progressed.
Students have also participated in a Pasta Quiz this week working in teams to revise the ingredients used to make pasta, the various pasta types/names and the term al dente.
Well done to Tahlia and Rhiannon who blitzed the competition in the last 5mins of the quiz to win the Movie tickets in Mrs Myers’s class. Cassie, Hayley and Ava scored themselves a canteen voucher each, for coming in a close second! Ms Butcher’s students were yet to complete the quiz at time of printing.
Next week will be the final part of the assessment, the evaluation of the practical lesson where students reflect on their organisational skills, teamwork, and the sensory properties of the dish.
Well done on completing your final assessment for year 9 Foods for Us!
