Dear Students, Parents, and Guardians,

As we progress towards the end of term three and move closer to concluding the year, I am writing to emphasise the crucial role that regular attendance plays in the academic success and overall well-being of our students. At this pivotal stage in student’s educational journey where courses are concluding and WACE requirements need to be met, it is imperative that they prioritise attending school on a daily basis ensuring that all prerequisites leading to high school graduation are going to be completed.

Regular attendance is not just about meeting a requirement, it is about actively engaging in the learning process, building relationships with peers and teachers, and developing crucial academic and life skills. Each day of school offers valuable opportunities for growth and discovery, and by being present, students are taking important steps towards achieving their full potential.

Research has consistently shown that students who attend school regularly are more likely to perform well academically, develop strong study habits, and form positive connections with their school community. By maintaining good attendance habits now, they are laying a solid foundation for their future success in higher education and beyond. “Non-attendance has a variety of effects on students, both academically and socially. Absenteeism can increase social isolation, including alienation and lack of engagement with the school community and peers, leading to emotional and behavioural difficulties (Carroll, 2013; Gottfried, 2014). It is also associated with an increased likelihood of drop-out (Keppens & Spruyt, 2017; London, Sanchez, Castrechini, & Castrechini, 2016).”

Furthermore, consistent attendance is a sign of respect not only for student’s own education but also for the efforts of their teachers and peers. Their presence in the classroom contributes to a dynamic and engaging learning environment where ideas are exchanged, questions are explored, and knowledge is shared.

I urge each and every one of you to prioritise regular attendance for the remainder of the year. Make a commitment to be present, engaged, and ready to learn each day. Your future self will thank you for the dedication and effort you invest in your education today.

It is crucial that year twelve students are in contact with their year 12 coordinator, Ms Defrenne and the Upper school Deputy, Mr Duffy, to ensure that they are on track for graduation and WACE completion.

Thank you for your attention to this important matter and let us work together to make the conclusion of this 2024 school year a success for all.

Warm regards,

Sig

Ian Masarei,
