Year 8 Science Fair

Several of our Year 8 students took the opportunity to showcase and present their in-depth investigations at the annual Science Fair. This event attracted a vibrant crowd, including many Years 5 and 6 students from local primary schools, who eagerly visited to explore the innovative projects on display.

In addition to the fair, our talented science teachers conducted engaging science lessons, further enriching the experience for the young visitors. Throughout the event, teachers and community members enthusiastically engaged in discussions with students, delving into the remarkable range of projects that highlighted the students’ creativity and hard work.

The students exhibited not only their scientific understanding but also their passion and engagement with the questions they had explored. The quality of the presentations left a lasting impression on everyone in attendance, including community members, primary school students, and staff, who were all captivated by the outstanding calibre of the work showcased.

Year 12 Titration Stakes

The Year 12 Chemistry students engaged in an exciting and competitive event known as the Titration Stake competition organised by Mr. Paul Kruger. This thrilling contest aimed to crown the “King of the Lab” or the “Queen of the Lab,” recognising the exceptional skills and precision of the participants in the art of titration. As they meticulously measured and mixed solutions, the students showcased their scientific expertise and enthusiasm for chemistry, all while vying for the prestigious title.

The winners will be announced at the Year 12 assembly at the end of term 3.

Year 10 DNA Barcode Blitz

This initiative, expertly coordinated by Mrs. Cara Gurney, represents a collaborative scientific endeavour between Murdoch University and the esteemed Harry Butler Institute. Our students exhibited remarkable enthusiasm and engagement as they undertook the intricate process of collecting and preparing invertebrate DNA samples. These samples were subsequently subjected to gel electrophoresis, a technique that allows for detailed examination and analysis. Following this phase, the samples will be dispatched to the scientists for in-depth investigation. We remain optimistic that this effort may lead to the identification of a new subspecies, contributing valuable insights to the field of science.

Science Quiz

All the students in the school were given a unique opportunity to engage in a captivating competition, where they could choose to participate as individuals or collaborate in groups. This event invited them to delve into the mysteries of the natural world, uncovering the hidden language of science. Organised by the dedicated Mrs. Lisa Bell, the event saw enthusiastic participation from numerous students, who not only showcased their talents and critical thinking, but also earned a variety of exciting prizes for their efforts. The experience fostered a sense of exploration and discovery, encouraging students to connect with the environment in meaningful ways. The winners were:

  • Winner of the Year 7 & 8 category is Kiana Sanderson
  • Winner of the Year 9 & 10 category is Jez Nicholson
  • Winners of the Year 11 & 12 category are Melinda Doney, Annie Lay, and Isaac Francis

These events truly exemplified the spirit of inquiry and collaboration that National Science Week represents.
