Our final day in Canberra started at the Australian Institute of Sport, where we toured the facilities that Australia’s elite athletes train at. A highlight was watching the gymnastics team in their training camp! We also saw the gym facilities (some athletes spend eight hours in the gym a day) and the pool where Olympians trained. Students tested their skills in a variety of sports after the tour in the Sports Lab.
We spent an inspiring hour at the Governor-General’s residence, learning about the important role of the Governor-General in our democracy and even how to nominate teachers for awards (go to www.gg.gov.au for the link!). Mr Reading and Ms Campbell even tested out Her Excellency’s desk! Sharni and Abbie represented our school by signing the Guest Book (the same book as King Charles III signed when he visited).

Our final stop on tour was at the National Portrait Gallery. Students learned how everyone has a different perspective of history through art. They were challenged to practice their drawing skills by sketching some of the portraits in the gallery.
We are incredibly thankful that students were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage, and democracy. The students represented the school exceptionally well and developed their curiosity, interpersonal skills, and resilience.

The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion, the Australian Government contributed funding to our school in the amount of $1785 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs.
I would like to thank Mr Reading and Ms Campbell for their support, knowledge, and commitment to providing this amazing opportunity for our students. A special thank you also to our parent helper, Mrs Myers, who provided that extra layer of ‘mum’ support to the students.
Stand by for the next tour in 2027!
