Focus on Year 8 Textiles
A productive first semester was had during Mrs Myers’s year 8 Textiles classes. Students brought in their old jeans to repurpose into a backpack. Skills that were utilised throughout the term included pinning, cutting, ironing and sewing; as well as a zip insertion! Well done students! Students could then personalise their finished back packs by adding decorations with fabric markers, iron on motifs and applique.
Additionally, some students’ work from previous years has been included in packages sent to developing countries.
Focus on Year 10 Photography
During Semester 1, Year 10 Photography students explored the art of multi-exposure portraiture as part of their photography program. Students learned about the fundamentals of studio portrait photography before applying these skills to photograph their peers in the school’s photography studio. They then used Adobe Photoshop to creatively combine their portrait images with self-captured photographs of plants or vegetation and produce their creative multi-exposure artwork. Well done students!
Focus on Year 11/12 Materials Design and Technologies Metals – Jewellery
Year 11 and 12 Materials Design and Technology Jewellery students applied a wide range of skills and processes throughout Semester One to create their own personally designed sterling silver pieces. After completing a series of skill-development tasks, students were required to design and manufacture an item of their choice. The design process formed a critical part of the project, whereby students generated and evaluated multiple design concepts before selecting a final solution. Students critically assessed their ideas against criteria such as functionality, aesthetics, and the production skills and knowledge required for successful manufacture.
Once designs were finalised, students applied a variety of jewellery-making techniques, including silver forming and shaping, silver soldering, silver casting, and stone setting. The completed pieces reflect the creativity, problem-solving abilities, and technical skill developed throughout the course. Some examples of the students’ completed work are pictured below.
Focus on Year 7 Jewellery
The Year 7 Jewellery taster provides students with a foundation in workshop health and safety before introducing them to a range of jewellery design and making skills. As part of the course, students designed and produced an acrylic key tag, exploring both the functional and aesthetic requirements of their product. Throughout the design process, students generated and evaluated a variety of ideas before selecting and refining a final solution that met the project criteria. During production, they developed an understanding of the properties of acrylic and gained experience in using the tools and processes required to work with the material. Students demonstrated excellent creativity and craftsmanship, with some outstanding examples completed during Semester 1 pictured below.
