Year 7’s students have settled into their Home Economics tasters with a productive start to 2025.

Mrs Myers’s foods class has just completed their first assessment task “Making Sensible Snack Choices.” Students have spent the first two weeks discussing the benefits of making healthy snacks as well as the requirements that need to be considered when cooking at home. The class then completed their individual food orders and production plans to be ready for their practical assessment. The students have also reflected on the health benefits of their chosen snacks with the use of the food model Healthy Eating Pyramid.

Monday, the 24th of February was a busy lesson with students collecting and preparing their own ingredients to reflect the production plans in their task booklets. Photos of their finished recipes display their understanding of presentation, garnishing, and plating.

The final aspect of the task is to evaluate the sensory properties of their recipe such as the appearance and flavour. Students needed to discuss their work habits such as organisational skills, time management, and clean-up procedures, including how to be environmentally friendly in the practical foods room.

In our textiles taster, the Year 7 students have been busy creating Felt pin cushions for their first assessment. They have watched a Click view video on the history of Felt and looked at resources to understand basic hand sewing techniques. The students have been enjoying making their strawberries and donuts using Felt, fibre fill, and cotton thread. Quinn decided to challenge her sewing skills and make a cupcake!

Once the students have created their hand-sewn pin cushion, they could personalise it by sewing on decorative features. Students have the option of using pieces of scrap felt, buttons, or beads to decorate their pin cushion.

The next task for the textiles taster involves the sewing machine, where students learn to safely sew on fabric by creating an appliqué design using recycled fabrics. The appliqué design features on the front of a hand-dyed drawstring bag that will be constructed in the remaining weeks of the term.
