IGO NOVA Work Experience 2024
From Thursday, December 5th to Tuesday, December 10th, a small group of Year 10 students, Bailen, Demi, Dylan, Jarrod, Kayne, Kurt, Riley and Theo, had the opportunity to visit and complete work experience at the IGO NOVA mine site, located 4 hours north of Esperance. Upon arrival, students and staff were checked into their individual rooms and outfitted with a full kit of mine site PPE – including their names embroidered on their shirts!
Once settled, the students were given a full tour of the site, including an exciting underground tour. They then met their mentors and spent the remainder of the time working on projects under their guidance, collaborating with surveyors, geologists, metallurgists, and environmental scientists.
At the end of their work experience, the students presented their project findings and mine experiences to a room full of IGO staff and their mentors. The students got a taste of real mine life, with provided meals (including unlimited access to ice cream), early wake ups, 12-hour workdays and plenty of social pickle ball.
This was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience for the students, who are immensely grateful to IGO for hosting them. The group is now back in Esperance, and after a week of 4:15 AM wake-up calls, they’re no doubt looking forward to a big sleep-in before presenting to the community, IGO, and school representatives this Thursday.
We are very proud of the SPARK values our students exhibited while on this camp and received wonderful feedback about the student’s work ethic, respect and friendly nature from the IGO staff. A massive thank you to IGO for making this camp possible and broadening the horizons of our students.
