EFTC students have been busy winning awards and learning new skills at shows and outdoor activities this term.
Big Wins at Agricultural Shows
The EFTC show team has done incredibly well at both the Esperance and Albany shows. At Esperance, their bull named “Unbeatabull” won the top prize of “Champion of the Show.” The team also won first place for their heifer over 15 months old, and she went on to win second-best female overall. When it came to showing pairs of heifers, EFTC took both first and second place.
The students themselves did a fantastic job handling the cattle. Three EFTC students made it to the finals of the cattle handling competition, competing against Mount Barker Community College. One of our students won first place as Champion Cattle Handler, while others came in second and fourth. EFTC won the most points of any school at the show – a prize that Mount Barker usually wins!
At the Albany Show, EFTC students competed against other schools including Denmark Agricultural College and Mount Barker. They won several prizes with their livestock, including takin home first & second with the British Breed Bulls.
Here’s how our students did at Albany:
– Demi Riordan – Third place in Cattle Handling
– Jordan Davies – Second place in Junior Judging
– Taj Spencer – Third place in Fancy Dress (the only sheep entry in the show!)
– Declan Hayward-McKean – Third place in Meat Sheep Judging
Fun and Learning Outside the Classroom
Students have also been learning lots of practical skills. The EFTC Cadet unit visited the Esperance Emergency Services, where they learned how to use radios and emergency equipment.
They spent time with both the State Emergency Service (SES) and Volunteer Marine Rescue (VMR) teams, trying out different activities. Students learned how to tie special knots, check safety equipment, and even tried wall climbing with safety harnesses. The wall climbing proved to be everyone’s favorite activity!
To finish off the term, students went camping overnight in the EFTC cadet tents. The next day, they hiked along the beautiful Cape Le Grand Coastal Trail from Thistle Cove to Hellfire Bay Beach. During the term, they also learned to cook on camping stoves, went bike riding, and enjoyed walks along the coast.
It’s been a great term to round out another school year.
